About
Slate was founded in late 2025 by chief executive Scott Elliot and chief technology officer Devin Picciolini, who had previously built lending products for the Canadian market at Brex, Airwallex and Keep. In January 2026 it closed $1.3M CAD in pre-seed funding via SAFE from N49P and North Exit Ventures, with Wealthsimple's Hanna Zaidi advising. Elliot's argument is that Canadian small-business borrowers trust their bank but their bank does not serve them, while they use vertical software platforms every day — so the trust and the transaction data already sit with the platform, and only the lending machinery is missing.
Backers
N49P and North Exit Ventures, plus undisclosed strategic angels, in a $1.3M CAD pre-seed announced January 2026.

Quick answers
What does Slate do?
It provides the underwriting, risk and regulatory infrastructure a software platform needs to offer financing to its own customers, so the platform can lend without building bank-level compliance itself.
Who founded Slate?
Scott Elliot, who is chief executive, and Devin Picciolini, chief technology officer, in late 2025.
Why Canada?
Elliot said Canadian borrowers, unlike American ones, largely distrust lenders outside the banks — while the banks mostly do not serve small businesses. Platforms that a business already runs on carry the trust and the data, so that is where the credit can sit.
