About

Jim McKelvey joined Alex Norman on the TechTO Fintech stage in July 2020 for a 34-minute conversation on innovation as a competitive advantage — the argument of his book The Innovation Stack, which is about what happened when Amazon copied Square's product and Square survived anyway. He co-founded Square with Jack Dorsey in 2009 after a customer of his glass studio wanted to pay by card and he had no way to take it. Square built the card reader, then the point-of-sale software, then the rest of a small-business financial stack. In December 2021 the parent company renamed itself Block, keeping Square as the seller brand alongside Cash App and its other businesses. McKelvey is now founder and CEO of Invisibly in St. Louis.

Backers

Publicly traded since Square's 2015 IPO; the listed parent is now Block, Inc.
