About
Symcor sits behind a large share of the paper and payments infrastructure Canadian institutions run on — customer statements, cheque clearing, payment processing — and has moved into services the industry is better off building once and sharing, notably fraud analytics and identity verification. Saba Shariff, its chief strategy, product and innovation officer, made that collective argument on TechTO's FintechTO stage in October 2018: patterns that no single bank can see in its own data become visible when the industry pools it.
Backers
Jointly owned by BMO, RBC and TD.
Quick answers
Who owns Symcor?
It is jointly owned by three Canadian banks — BMO, RBC and TD.
What does it actually do?
Business process outsourcing at national scale: statements, cheque and payment processing, and increasingly shared fraud and identity services.
Why did it speak at FintechTO?
Saba Shariff's 2018 talk was about fighting online fraud collectively — using AI over data pooled across institutions rather than each bank working alone.
