About
Thinking Capital is a Montreal financial technology lender for Canadian small businesses, founded in 2006. It underwrites and funds term loans of up to $300,000 for businesses that have been operating at least six months, using transaction data rather than the collateral-heavy process a bank branch would run, and distributes largely through partners — CIBC, National Bank, Staples and TouchBistro among them. Som Seif's Purpose Financial acquired the company in 2018 in a deal reported at about $200 million. Thinking Capital has since acquired the finance-as-a-service platform Ario. Jean-Luc Dery was its CTO from 2016 to 2019 and presented at TechTO's FintechTO in January 2018 on rebuilding the lending platform while the existing business kept running on it.
Backers
Thinking Capital has been owned by Purpose Financial since its 2018 acquisition, reported at about $200 million. Its earlier private investors were not confirmed in the sources checked.
