About

Toothpod makes a chewable dental hygiene tablet built around four active ingredients: hydroxyapatite to remineralize enamel, magnolia bark extract to reduce harmful bacteria, resveratrol as an anti-inflammatory and xylitol against plaque. The company positions it as what you use when brushing is not an option, rather than a replacement for a toothbrush. Vishar Yaghoubian co-founded it with PhD candidate Brian Webb out of the University of Toronto. She told a TechTO Health Toronto audience that she started the company in 2019 at 18, after entering an accelerator competition almost by accident, winning it, and then googling the world's biggest problems — cavities came second after poverty. The Globe and Mail reported she had raised $850,000 on top of $450,000 in government grants for the eight-person company, with backers including Michele Romanow, hedge fund manager Mark Diker and former AstraZeneca Canada president Michael Cloutier, and that the product had reached US dental clinics, with the Dental Care Alliance planning to offer it across more than 400 affiliated practices.
