About

Twilio was founded in 2008 by Jeff Lawson, Evan Cooke and John Wolthuis on the premise that telephony and messaging should be available to developers as an API rather than as a carrier relationship. Ricky Robinett brought that pitch to TechTO in December 2014 with a live build — a talk called Build an App Together — at a point when the company was still principally known to developers. Twilio went public on the New York Stock Exchange in June 2016 under the ticker TWLO, raising US$150 million in gross proceeds. Lawson stepped down as chief executive and left the board in January 2024 and was succeeded by Khozema Shipchandler. Twilio reported total revenue of US$5.07 billion for the 2025 financial year, up 14 per cent year over year. Robinett has since moved to Google Cloud.

Backers

Publicly traded on the NYSE since June 2016; its pre-IPO venture backers are no longer the relevant ownership story.
