About
Uber was founded in San Francisco in 2009 by Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick and now reports gross bookings of US$193 billion and revenue of US$52.0 billion for its 2025 financial year, across ride-hailing, delivery and freight. Its Canadian thread runs deeper than a market listing. Uber Eats started in 2015 as a small lunch-delivery experiment in Toronto — the first city it operated in anywhere — before growing into a global platform. Two Canadians in senior roles have taken TechTO stages. Andrew Macdonald, a Torontonian who joined Uber in 2012 as its first Canadian general manager and later ran the company's global mobility business, appeared on TechTO Together in April 2020 to describe how Uber responded to the first weeks of the pandemic by leaning into delivery, grocery and health transport; he became president and chief operating officer in 2025. Lola Kassim spoke at TechTO People in July 2020 with Marlon Thompson of Highline Beta, in a session about turning anti-racist intent into practice rather than statements. She had become general manager of Uber Eats Canada at the start of that year, after running Uber's ride-hailing business in West Africa from Nigeria — roughly eight years in the region between Liberia and Nigeria — and is originally from Toronto, having started her career in Ottawa.
