About
VarageSale was built around trust: unlike Craigslist or Kijiji, every member was pre-screened by a person, each local community had its own moderators, and there was a 24-hour safety line. Tami Zuckerman came up with it while on maternity leave from teaching kindergarten and built the first version with her husband Carl Mercier. It raised US$34M in a 2015 Series B from Sequoia Capital and Lightspeed, after earlier money from Real Ventures and iNovia. The company never landed a revenue model: it laid off around 30 percent of staff in January 2016, its CEO stepped back to product that March, and VerticalScope acquired it in November 2017.
Backers
