About

Vital Bio was founded in 2019 by Vasu Nadella with Mounir Koussa, Farnoud Kazemzadeh, Iman Khodadad and Emily Chen. Its premise is that most attempts to make care more accessible still move the same bodies around — clinics into pharmacies, doctors into homes — while diagnostics stays anchored to the central lab. VitalOne is a desktop-sized system that takes roughly 600 microlitres of blood, from a venipuncture or a finger prick, together with two single-patient consumables, and returns over 50 lab-grade tests covering about 95% of routine lab orders. The company works out of warehouse space in Mississauga and was, as of its September 2024 TechTO appearance, pre-commercial and not reviewed by any regulatory body.

Backers

Sam Altman (OpenAI), Marc Benioff (Salesforce), Lachy Groom, Northpond Ventures, Labcorp, Inovia Capital and Route 66 Ventures. Nadella named Altman and Labcorp from the TechTO stage; the fuller list is from press coverage of the 2023 round.

Quick answers

What does Vital Bio do?

It builds VitalOne, a countertop analyser that runs a comprehensive blood panel where the patient already is — a physician's office — rather than sending the sample to a central lab and waiting. Roughly 600 microlitres of blood yields more than 50 tests in about twenty minutes.

Who founded Vital Bio?

Vasu Nadella, with Mounir Koussa, Farnoud Kazemzadeh, Iman Khodadad and Emily Chen, in 2019. Nadella had an earlier exit in Montreal and came to Toronto as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Inovia before starting the company.

Is VitalOne available to buy?

Not as of the company's September 2024 TechTO appearance, when Nadella said explicitly that the product had not been reviewed by any regulatory body and the company was not yet commercial. That may have changed since; check the company directly.
