About
West Park Healthcare Centre sits in Toronto's west end near Jane and Weston, and treats people rebuilding function after life-altering illness or injury — lung disease, amputation, stroke, major musculoskeletal trauma. It was founded in 1904 as a tuberculosis sanatorium. In April 2024 two things happened at once: the voluntary integration of West Park with University Health Network took effect on 1 April, and patients moved into a new six-storey, 316-bed hospital. Its research and innovation function has deliberately made the hospital available to companies as a place to test: Tim Pauley, then manager of research and evaluation, presented at TechTO's HealthTO in October 2018 alongside Jay Couse of Spectrum AI, whose computer vision fall-detection system was being trialled in patient rooms there. Pauley's argument was that what a startup needs from a hospital is not a signature but the staff — therapists, pharmacists, frontline nurses and patients in the room while the product is tested.
