About

WorldGaming operated online competitive gaming tournaments from Toronto and owned Collegiate StarLeague, the US college esports league founded in 2009. Cineplex invested $10 million for 80 per cent of the company in the autumn of 2015, with a further $5 million to expand the business, betting that competitive gaming would fill its theatres and screens. Wim Stocks was named chief executive of WorldGaming and Collegiate StarLeague in April 2016; on the TechTO stage in October 2019 he said the company had been around for ten years, with only the last three of those under Cineplex. Under Cineplex the college league grew from 900 schools in 2017 to over 1,800. In September 2020 Cineplex sold WorldGaming Network to Playfly Sports, which continued to operate both brands.

Backers

Majority-owned by Cineplex Inc. from 2015; acquired by Playfly Sports in September 2020.
