About
The problem Ability Biologics is built around is that a powerful immune-activating drug given systemically hits healthy tissue as well as diseased tissue. Its answer is conditional: antibodies that stay inert until they reach a particular microenvironment and only then activate — logic-gated, in the company's language. The AbiLeap platform behind them integrates generative AI with a large antibody-antigen database to design fully human IgG-based molecules aimed at highly targeted immunomodulators. The company came out of stealth in December 2023 with a US$12 million seed round and closed a US$18 million extension in June 2024. It has since operated under the name Ability Biotherapeutics at ability.bio. Allison Nixon, who joined as director of platform sciences in January 2025, did her PhD in molecular genetics at the University of Toronto on integrins in tumour heterogeneity, developing human synthetic antibodies, CRISPR editing and genetic barcoding for cancer models; she presented at TechTO in 2018 for Phenomic AI.
