ALT TEX

ALT TEX is a Toronto biotech turning landfill-bound food waste into a biodegradable alternative to polyester. A fermentation process converts the waste into a bioplastic, then a fibre, then fabric sold to fashion brands. Founded in 2020 by Myra Arshad and Avneet Ghotra; Y Combinator Summer 2022.

About

Myra Arshad and Avneet Ghotra have worked together since high school — she brings a family background in textile manufacturing and corporate sales, he brings biochemistry. ALT TEX went through Creative Destruction Lab, raised a $1.5M pre-seed in 2021, and did Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch. Arshad took the TechTO stage in February 2026 to argue that hard-tech founders should think harder before applying to YC.

Backers

Garage Capital and Amplify Capital co-led the 2021 pre-seed, with Globalive Capital and Panache Ventures participating; Y Combinator Summer 2022.

Quick answers

What does ALT TEX make?

A biodegradable polyester alternative. Food waste destined for landfill is fermented into a bioplastic, spun into fibre and made into fabric for fashion brands.

Who founded ALT TEX?

Myra Arshad, who is CEO, and Avneet Ghotra, who is CTO, in 2020.

What did ALT TEX learn from Y Combinator?

That the programme's tempo suits software. Arshad told TechTO that YC optimises for fast iteration and speed to market while hard tech optimises for speed to insight, and that a deep-tech founder has to synchronise the two before applying.
