About
Acorn Biolabs collects live stem cells non-invasively by plucking roughly fifty hair follicles in a clinic, then cryopreserves them at -310F so they are available for later regenerative and aesthetic use. It also processes banked cells into personalised secretome treatments delivered as monthly vials in a practitioner's office. Dr. Drew Taylor founded the company in 2017 after discovering the potential of hair-follicle stem cells during his biomedical engineering PhD at the University of Toronto. Acorn launched its service in Canada and the US in 2023 and closed a Series A of more than US$8M in 2024 led by Merz Aesthetics. It is scaling in the US through dermatologist partnerships.

How does Acorn Biolabs collect cells?
By plucking about fifty hair follicles in a clinic, which is non-invasive and needs no surgery or blood draw. The live cells inside the follicles are then cryopreserved for future use.
Why bank cells at all?
Taylor's argument on the TechTO stage was that regenerative medicine is arriving now, using a patient's own cells rather than manufactured chemical compounds, and that cells collected earlier are younger and less damaged than cells collected later.
