About
Casper came out of academic work on whether people skills can be assessed at admissions scale; Rich Emrich co-founded the company with two academics he was introduced to by a former boss, and ran it as CEO. Growth came from medical schools first: by January 2018, three years in, it was assessing over half of US medical school applicants, and it later spread into other health professions and geographies as far as Australia. The company acquired One45, a medical education software company, in August 2021, and renamed itself Acuity Insights in 2022 to cover the wider platform. Matt Holland succeeded Emrich as CEO in January 2024.

Quick answers
What is Casper?
A situational judgement test taken by applicants to competitive programmes, scoring how they reason about interpersonal and ethical situations. Schools use it alongside grades and tests like the MCAT.
Why the name change?
The company launched as Altus Assessments in 2014 and renamed itself Acuity Insights in 2022 to reflect a platform broader than the assessment itself, including One45, acquired in 2021.
Who runs it?
Matt Holland became CEO in January 2024, succeeding co-founder Rich Emrich.
