Aida Software

Aida Software was a Vancouver AI company that used natural language processing to answer customer support questions, founded and led by Jenny Yang. Vision Critical acquired it in a deal announced in March 2018 and Yang went on to lead data science there — her second AI company sold, after Metafor Software went to Splunk in 2015.

About

Jenny Yang was a venture investor at BDC Venture Capital and a consultant at Boston Consulting Group and Bain before she started building. Her first company, Metafor Software, did anomaly detection on large time-series data coming out of data centres and was acquired by Splunk in 2015, with the team landing in Splunk's Vancouver office. Aida was the second: AI and NLP applied to customer support, answering the questions a support team would otherwise field by hand. Vision Critical, the Vancouver customer-intelligence software company, acquired Aida's assets in a deal announced on 22 March 2018 — Yang told a TechVancouver audience the following month that the deal had closed in December — and the Aida data science team moved across with her leading it. Her April 2018 talk was deliberately structured as five minutes of setup and then questions: she said she disliked talking at people, and offered her background mainly so the room would know what to ask.
