AquaMobile

AquaMobile is a Toronto-founded marketplace that sends swim instructors to clients' home and condo pools for private lessons across Canada, the US and Australia. Diana Goodwin bootstrapped it from zero to seven figures of annual revenue with no outside funding, and in 2019 spun its internal booking platform out as a separate company, MarketBox.

About

Diana Goodwin founded AquaMobile in Toronto and grew it without raising any capital — she told the TechTO stage in March 2017 that it had gone from zero to over seven figures of annual revenue on no funding, which meant getting creative on a limited budget. The Globe and Mail reported in March 2016 that she asked for $200,000 for 10% on Dragons' Den, drew three offers at 15%, declined them all, and took the $100,000 TELUS Small Business Challenge prize instead. Because no off-the-shelf platform fit the business, AquaMobile built its own scheduling, waitlist and payroll tech in-house. When other mobile-service companies started asking to license it, Goodwin spun that platform out in 2019 as MarketBox and announced it from the TechTO stage. AquaMobile still operates.

Backers

None — bootstrapped. Goodwin said on the TechTO stage in March 2017 that AquaMobile reached seven figures of annual revenue without raising any funds, and in March 2019 that she chose to bootstrap in order to keep control and stay profitable from the start. The Globe and Mail reported in March 2016 that she declined all three Dragons' Den offers.

Quick answers

What does AquaMobile do?

It is a marketplace for at-home swimming lessons: instructors travel to clients' home and condo pools to teach privately. Goodwin said on the TechTO stage in March 2019 that it had over 2,500 instructors across Canada, the United States and, most recently, Australia.

Who founded AquaMobile?

Diana Goodwin, its sole founder. She bootstrapped it with no outside capital and later founded MarketBox, the SaaS company spun out of AquaMobile's own booking platform in 2019.

Did AquaMobile raise money?

No. Goodwin told the TechTO stage in 2017 that it passed seven figures of annual revenue without raising any funds, and in 2019 that she bootstrapped deliberately to keep control and stay profitable from the get-go. She also declined all three Dragons' Den offers in 2016.

What is the connection between AquaMobile and MarketBox?

AquaMobile built its scheduling, waitlist and payroll software in-house because nothing on the market fit. In 2018 other mobile-service businesses — beauty, music teachers, yoga, personal training — began asking to license or white-label it, so Goodwin spun it out in 2019 as MarketBox, announcing it from the TechTO stage.
