Houndr treated dog care as a neighbourhood problem rather than a marketplace one: rather than book a professional, an owner posted to nearby neighbours who had already been vetted through the app. Amy Bath and Mike Onorati started it in Toronto after finding it hard to arrange help for their chocolate lab, and CBC covered the launch in 2018 — the app was free to download, with owners paying $5 for a half-hour walk, up to $20 a day, or $25 for an overnight stay. On the TechTO stage in April 2019 the founders framed the pitch around a Toronto Foundation finding that most people do not know their neighbours, and pitched Houndr as much as a way to meet them as a way to get a dog walked. The company's site is no longer operating — gethoundr.com now redirects to a domain broker — and no recent activity could be sourced.
