Avail

Avail was a Toronto well-being platform. It started as a free app that tracked the stress in someone's life against the recovery time they were getting and pointed them at care, then sold the same idea to employers as a weekly mental-health check-up. Its site no longer responds.

About

Avail measured stress against recovery. Jason McFadden explained the premise on the HealthTO stage in August 2018: about 60 percent of people report being stressed and roughly 14 percent describe themselves as stress-free, and what separates the second group is that they balance stress with enough recovery — so Avail's app tracked both, built a psychometric profile over repeated short check-ins, and connected people to care resources instead of leaving them to search symptoms online. McFadden said the approach had cut injury and illness by 23 percent among a group of elite athletes and first responders, and that the consumer app was free on the App Store. The company later sold to employers rather than individuals, positioning itself against traditional employee assistance programs: brief weekly mental-health and well-being check-ups that flagged issues early, discreet access to a 24/7 network of care professionals, self-directed resources, and features for adding friends and family to a support network. avail.app has since stopped responding.

Quick answers

What did Avail do?

It tracked the stress in a person's life against the recovery time they were actually getting, built a profile from short repeated check-ins, and connected them to care resources. It began as a free consumer app and later sold to employers as a well-being platform.

What did Avail say on the TechTO stage?

At HealthTO in August 2018 Jason McFadden argued stress is only harmful if you believe it is, that reading and music are better recovery than the caffeine, alcohol and food people actually reach for, and that Avail's work with elite athletes and first responders had cut injury and illness by 23 percent.

Is Avail still operating?

Its site, avail.app, returns a server error and has not been successfully archived since September 2025. No shutdown announcement was found, so nothing more definite can be said.
