About

Jeff Booth started BuildDirect in 1999 after working as a builder and getting burned by the building-materials supply chain — he once had to put a family in a hotel and their furniture in storage. The company built its own logistics for heavyweight goods, reached $55M in revenue in about four years, collapsed to $18M in the 2008 housing crisis, and rebuilt to $120M over the next four. In 2017 Booth opened the platform to suppliers, taking the catalogue from 6,000 products to 130,000 — the move he described on stage that June as blowing up a half-billion-dollar company. He resigned that October over disagreements with the company's debt holders, BuildDirect filed for creditor protection days later, and it emerged in March 2018 with US$43M in new funding led by Mohr Davidow Ventures. Today it is a public company (TSXV: BILD) selling flooring through Pro Centers aimed at contractors and trades, and has been buying up regional flooring distributors.

Backers

Public company since 2021 (TSXV: BILD; OTCQB: BDCTF). Mohr Davidow Ventures led the US$43M round on its 2018 exit from creditor protection; earlier private backers reported to include OMERS Ventures — treat the pre-2018 investor list as unverified.

Quick answers

What does BuildDirect do?

It sells flooring and related home-improvement materials — wood, vinyl, tile, carpet and decking — online and through Pro Centers, distribution hubs serving professional contractors and trades. It is based in Vancouver and has been operating since 1999.

Who founded BuildDirect?

Jeff Booth and Rob Banks, in 1999. Booth ran it as CEO for 18 years and resigned in October 2017; he is now a founding partner at Ego Death Capital.

Is BuildDirect still in business?

Yes. It filed for creditor protection under the CCAA in late 2017 and emerged in March 2018 with US$43M in new funding. It now trades on the TSX Venture Exchange as BILD and expected revenue of US$14.3–14.8M in Q1 2026.

What happened to BuildDirect in 2008?

Customers had been paying three months in advance for products; when that stopped in the housing crisis, revenue fell from $55M to $18M. Booth said on the TechTO stage that he and his wife sold their house on the way through it.
