About
Chalk started at the University of Waterloo, where a $25,000 Velocity Fund pitch win got the team into the Velocity Garage. Its products — Planboard for lesson planning, Markboard for assessment — were aimed at the daily workflow of K-12 teachers rather than at administrators, and reached hundreds of thousands of them across more than 20,000 schools. William Zhou was chief executive from 2012 until the sale. PowerSchool acquired Chalk.com Education Inc. in 2022 for US$13.5 million, made up of US$10.4 million in cash and US$3.1 million contingent on performance; chalk.com now redirects to PowerSchool's curriculum and instruction pages.
Backers
Early funding included a $25,000 Velocity Fund award at the University of Waterloo and a seed round in 2015.
Quick answers
Does Chalk still exist?
Not independently. PowerSchool acquired it in 2022 and chalk.com now redirects to PowerSchool's curriculum and instruction product pages.
What did Chalk make?
Software for K-12 teachers — Planboard for lesson planning and Markboard for assessment — designed around a teacher's day rather than around district administration.
