About

DB8 Labs is Marc Lafleur's second act. He co-founded truLOCAL at the University of Waterloo, grew it past 60 staff and about $20 million in annual revenue on a Dragons' Den deal with Michele Romanow, and sold it in 2021 for $16.8 million. The studio he started in May 2023 works the other side of that experience: rather than taking a single idea to market, it builds and runs niche AI-driven consumer products itself, with the stated aim of levelling a field the largest AI companies otherwise own, and Lafleur scouts Canadian AI startups alongside it. The Canadian Intellectual Property Office profiled the studio in February 2026, noting it registered trademarks on both its name and logo in September 2025 — a deliberate move for a studio whose output is a portfolio of brands.

Backers

No outside funding round is announced anywhere read for this page; the studio is Lafleur's own, started after the truLOCAL sale.
