About

Eve Medical is a Toronto medtech company founded in 2010 by Jessica Ching and Evan Moses. Its product, HerSwab, is a hand-held self-sampling device that lets a woman collect her own sample for HPV, cervical cancer and STI testing — at home or in a clinic — instead of a clinician-performed speculum exam. Ching, an industrial designer trained at OCAD University, started the company after a conversation with friends about how routinely women put the test off; research on self-sampling showed it raised participation, but the devices being handed to patients had been designed for clinicians rather than for the people using them. Eve Medical designed for the patient instead. The company has Health Canada approval, and its device has been used by health authorities for in-clinic self-sampling internationally.

Quick answers

What does Eve Medical do?

It makes HerSwab, a self-sampling device for cervical cancer and STI screening. A woman collects her own sample rather than undergoing a clinician-performed exam, which removes several of the reasons screening gets skipped.

Who founded Eve Medical?

Jessica Ching and Evan Moses, in Toronto in 2010. Ching, an OCAD-trained industrial designer, is CEO and leads product; Moses handles operations and finance.

Why was HerSwab designed?

Self-sampling was already shown to raise screening participation, but the devices patients were given had been designed for clinical use. Ching told TechTO in 2017 that this caused usability, consistency and confidence problems, so Eve Medical designed one for the patient.
