About
Ground News grew out of the University of Waterloo's Velocity incubator and is run from Kitchener, Ontario. Harleen Kaur, a former aerospace engineer who worked on NASA's New Horizons mission, is chief executive; her brother Sukh Singh, an app developer, is chief technology officer. The product takes a single news event and lines up every outlet covering it, tagging each by political lean, factuality rating and ownership so a reader can see what their usual sources left out — the "Blindspot" idea the company is best known for. It is paid for by subscribers rather than advertising: the company says it is "supported by our subscribers and independently controlled and operated by our founders and team," with no corporate media, big-tech or government money. Named backers on its own about page include Techstars, the Ontario Centre of Innovation, Velocity Fund and 37 Angels, alongside individuals who have led the Associated Press, USA Today, Riot Games, TD Ameritrade and Shopify. Harleen Kaur spoke at TechWaterloo in August 2017, before Ground News, about getting app downloads on almost no budget for her earlier photo-sharing startup uCiC.
