GrowWise Health ran clinics and education centres for patients considering medical cannabis, staffed by nurses, physicians and other providers who worked one-to-one on treatment plans. Registered nurse Sarah Medel told a special HealthTO edition in May 2018 that she had joined after a colleague described the then-small startup, and that she and her team had helped more than seven thousand patients over the previous three years. She described an industry with almost no reliable clinical reference material, patients arriving as a last resort after exhausting conventional treatment, and one patient who came off ten years of opioid medication for chronic pain. Her argument was that the sector's real bottleneck was not supply but clinician knowledge — that providers had to be equipped to have the conversation at all. GrowWise became a subsidiary of Emblem Corp, and in December 2018 Aleafia Health agreed to acquire Emblem in an all-share transaction valued at $173.2 million, combining GrowWise with the Canabo Medical Clinic network.
