About
Kik launched out of the University of Waterloo in 2009 as a mobile messenger that did not require a phone number, and became widely used by North American teenagers. In 2017 Kik Interactive raised nearly US$100M in a token distribution event for Kin, a cryptocurrency meant to underpin a decentralised ecosystem of digital services inside the app — the subject of Tanner Philp's TechTO FintechTO talk that November. The SEC sued over the token sale. Kik announced it would shut the messenger down in September 2019, then reversed course when MediaLab acquired it that October; MediaLab runs the app today.
