About

LawZero was announced on 3 June 2025 by Yoshua Bengio, the Turing Award laureate and Mila founder, as a non-profit research organisation for technical AI safety rather than policy advocacy. Its argument is that the danger in frontier systems comes from agency — models that pursue goals, and in testing show deception and self-preservation — so its research direction, called Scientist AI, is a deliberately non-agentic model that predicts and explains rather than acts, and can be used to supervise agentic systems, accelerate science and study risk. The organisation was incubated at Mila – Quebec AI Institute, which remains its operating partner, and is funded by donors including the Gates Foundation, the Future of Life Institute, Schmidt Sciences, Founders Pledge, Coefficient Giving, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and NVIDIA.
