About

OANDA started in 1995, before 'fintech' was a word, when University of Toronto professor Michael Stumm and Richard Olsen set out to publish accurate currency exchange rates for free. The rates site launched in 1996 and the company went on to build a retail foreign exchange trading platform regulated across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Stumm ran it as CEO from 2001 to 2012. CVC Capital Partners Asia Fund IV agreed to acquire it in May 2018; CVC in turn agreed to sell OANDA to the FTMO group in February 2025, and FTMO announced the completed acquisition in December 2025. Stumm looked back at the whole thing on the TechTO stage in August 2016.
