About

Opencare was co-founded by Nikolai Bratkovski, who had already built and exited a medical imaging SaaS business serving two million patients a year. He told the TechTO stage in February 2019 that the team chose dentistry deliberately: it is the doctor most people see most often across a lifetime, the spend is enormous — he cited US$129B a year on US dental services and C$15B in Canada — and almost nobody enjoys the appointment. The bet was that a company able to change that behaviour could move people on other health decisions too.

The consumer side is a curated network: the company says it has spent "thousands of hours vetting dentists all over North America," monitors patient feedback, and that its practices have cared for over 100,000 Opencare patients with 98% positive reviews. The other half of the business sells patient acquisition to practices. Bratkovski described a further ambition on stage — an operating system for the dental practice itself, on the reasoning that dentists are trained for ten years in delivering care and not at all in delivering patient experience. The company keeps addresses in Toronto and San Francisco and was still recruiting as of August 2026.

Backers

8VC led Opencare's seed and Series A — Kimmy Scotti, then a founding partner there, said so on the same TechTO stage as Bratkovski. Other investors were not confirmed this run.

Quick answers

What is Opencare?

A dental marketplace operating across North America. Patients find and book vetted dentists through it; practices buy patient acquisition from it. The company keeps offices in Toronto and San Francisco.

How big is it?

Its own About page says network dentists have cared for over 100,000 Opencare patients with 98% positive reviews. On the TechTO stage in February 2019 Bratkovski gave a snapshot of about 40 staff, just over C$35M raised, and roughly C$165M in annual patient value flowing to dentists — figures that are now dated.

Why dentistry rather than another specialty?

Frequency and size. Bratkovski told TechTO it is the doctor people see most across a lifetime, that US dental services are a US$129B market with C$15B in Canada, and that the universal dislike of the visit made it a good place to prove that a company can change health behaviour.
