About
Plaid sits between a consumer app and the bank holding the money: it handles the connection, the permissions and the account data so a budgeting, lending or payments product does not have to integrate with each bank itself. Zach Perret and William Hockey founded the company in San Francisco in 2013. Visa agreed to buy it for US$5.3 billion in 2020; the deal was abandoned under antitrust pressure. A 2021 round valued it at US$13.4 billion, and in April 2025 it raised US$575 million at US$6.1 billion, led by Franklin Templeton with Fidelity, BlackRock, NEA and Ribbit Capital joining — a round largely intended to cover employee tax withholding rather than growth. Perret has said 2024 revenue passed US$300 million, up 25%.

Quick answers
What does Plaid do?
It provides the connections that let a fintech app read a consumer's bank account with permission — account data, balances and transactions — so the app does not have to integrate with each bank directly.
Is Plaid Canadian?
No. It is a San Francisco company. It appears in this directory because Zach Perret presented at TechTO's FintechTO event in Toronto in 2018.
