About
Mahimker was put through a Kumon-style tutoring programme as a child and hated it; he was also addicted to Pokemon. Prodigy is the answer to why those had to be different experiences — kids battle monsters by answering curriculum-aligned math questions, and teachers get the data behind it. The two founders spent about eighteen months after graduating embedded in Mentor College and Ridley College, testing daily with kids and teachers. Three decisions came out of that: freemium, because even private schools would not pay; alignment to the Ontario math standards, because that is what teachers teach to; and HTML5 rather than native apps, because school computers were twenty years old. Prodigy launched in January 2013 with about 3,000 Ontario students and passed 25 million registered students by 2017. A 2022 reorganisation was followed by a refreshed senior leadership team through 2023 and 2024.

Quick answers
What is Prodigy?
A free, curriculum-aligned math game for grades 1 to 8. Children play a Pokemon-style RPG in which answering math questions is how you win battles; teachers and parents get reporting behind it.
Who founded it?
Rohan Mahimker and Alex Peters, engineering students at the University of Waterloo, in 2011. They remain co-CEOs.
Why is it free?
Testing inside two private schools showed that even they would not pay for the product, so the founders switched to freemium and optimised for adoption instead (TechTO stage 2017-12-13).
