About
Quupe started as a free item-sharing platform among students at Vancouver's Centre for Digital Media, who noticed how much borrowing of bikes, snowboards and vacuum cleaners already went on between them. It relaunched as a paid rental marketplace in 2017 and was a top-ten New Ventures BC startup in 2018. CEO Angela Hamilton took the TechVancouver stage in March 2019 and described the classic two-sided problem: because Quupe never owned inventory, it had to build the supply side first, recruiting lenders and partnering with local businesses that already held stock. The team's own closing post-mortem reports 500 lenders hosting $2.7M of inventory, $60K earned by 100 of them, and 99% of reviews at five stars — but says a transaction-fee model needed volume they could not reach. The company was sunset in 2022.

Quick answers
What was Quupe?
A Vancouver peer-to-peer rental marketplace where people rented items from neighbours — cameras, tools, outdoor gear. It ran from 2016 until it was wound down in 2022.
Why did Quupe shut down?
Its own post-mortem says a transaction-fee model needed volume the company could not reach, despite 99% of reviews rating it five stars. Traction was real but niche, concentrated in Vancouver film and photography equipment.
Who founded Quupe?
Angela Hamilton, Zeeshan Rasool, Vijay Ramaswamy and Amanda Shou, who met at Vancouver's Centre for Digital Media in 2016.
