About
Radical was founded in 2017 by the team behind Layer 6 AI and the Vector Institute, and it invests on a single premise: that AI is a general-purpose technology on the scale of electricity, and that the research behind it came out of Canada. Jordan Jacobs told TechTO in May 2020, a year into the firm's first institutional fund, that the goal was both to be the leading AI investment firm in the world and to have the resulting giant companies built here rather than acquired away. The firm has since raised repeatedly — a $650 million USD fourth early-stage fund closed in October 2025, replacing a 2023 vehicle, alongside a growth fund — and now has offices in London and San Francisco as well as Toronto. Its portfolio includes Cohere, Waabi, Aspect Biosystems and Toronto's PocketHealth, which Jacobs discussed on stage with founder Rishi Nayyar and noted at the time was the rare Radical investment not using AI.
Backers
A venture fund rather than an operating company. BetaKit, citing the Financial Times, reported that the family office of former Google CEO Eric Schmidt backed its 2023 fund; its other limited partners are not disclosed in full.
