Roar Ventures

About

Peggy Van de Plassche started Roar Ventures in July 2018 after a career that ran through CGI and BMO, a VP innovation role at CIBC, and a senior advisor post at Portag3 Ventures. The fund targeted early-stage data and AI companies aimed at the financial services industry, with a stated $35-million target raised largely from strategic corporate investors — banks and insurers looking to accelerate their own transformation. Van de Plassche, who moved to Toronto from Lille, France to be closer to Canada's financial services centre, used her January 2019 TechTO talk to draw lessons from having been both an operator and an investor. Her first lesson was pivoting: she described working for a Finnish tech entrepreneur while simultaneously managing his money and starting businesses, and said the constant pivots were the part that still gave her trauma to think about. The firm's domains no longer resolve and she now runs PVDP Advisory Services; the fund appears to be inactive.

Backers

As a fund rather than an operating company, Roar Ventures raised from strategic corporate investors — banks and insurers — against a $35-million target. Whether that target was reached is not stated in any source found here.
