About

RxFood began as Inner Analytics Inc., co-founded by Elizabeth Choi and Dr. Jeff Alfonsi. Its first product launched in 2015 through a partnership with The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, helping children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes work out what they had eaten, and the Physicians Services Incorporated Foundation later funded a randomized controlled trial of it. The premise is that dietary assessment is the bottleneck in nutrition therapy: patients photograph their meals, machine vision estimates the nutritional content, and clinicians get usable data instead of a food diary nobody fills in. By 2019 the company was extending beyond diabetes to hypertension and obesity. It now trades as RxFood, describes itself as a clinically validated dietary-therapy platform, integrates with wearables such as continuous glucose monitors, and names SickKids, the Cleveland Clinic and Ontario Health among the organisations it works with. In 2025 it began a commercialization project with CHEO's diabetes clinic in Ottawa through the CAN Health Network. Alfonsi represented the company on TechTO's HealthTO stage in May 2020, on a panel about whether COVID-19 would accelerate virtual health care.

Backers

No named investor is on the public record. The randomized controlled trial of its first product was funded by the Physicians Services Incorporated Foundation, which is a research grant rather than an investment.

Quick answers

What does RxFood do?

Patients photograph their meals; AI image recognition estimates the nutritional content; clinicians use that as the basis for dietary therapy in chronic conditions such as diabetes, obesity and eating disorders. It also integrates with wearables including continuous glucose monitors.

Was RxFood called something else?

Yes. It was founded as Inner Analytics Inc. and its University of Toronto Entrepreneurship listing still records InnerAnalytics as the former name. The TechTO talk in May 2020 introduced Jeffrey Alfonsi as CTO of Inner Analytics.

Who founded RxFood?

Elizabeth Choi and Dr. Jeff Alfonsi, both University of Waterloo systems design engineering graduates, founded it as Inner Analytics Inc. Alfonsi is a physician and was introduced as the company's CTO on the TechTO stage in 2020.
