About

ScaleUP Ventures was founded in Toronto in 2016 around a simple pitch it still leads with: capital plus connections. Its own site frames the gap as the distance between initial traction and real scale — "you need access to capital and connections to people who have done it all before" — and the firm's distinguishing feature is a leadership council of experienced Canadian operators attached to the fund. It raised over $100M from private investors alongside commitments from the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, and expanded into Western Canada.

The cheque size Matt Roberts described on the TechTO stage in September 2021 was roughly $250,000 to $500,000 at the low end and up to $2.5M, covering what the firm calls seed or Series A. He was blunt about the bar: he no longer does pre-revenue companies, having "learned very, very hard" how difficult that is, and looks for a first handful of customers with a measurable transactional relationship. Portfolio companies announced on the firm's own site include Coconut Software, Rewind, Nylas and Dooly. Roberts has since left — he co-founded CMD Capital and is now at RBCx — and the firm's public news feed has not been updated since 2021, so its current investing activity is not established here.

Quick answers

What does ScaleUP Ventures invest in?

Canadian early-stage companies, with a preference for B2B software. On the TechTO stage in September 2021 Matt Roberts put the cheque range at about $250,000 to $2.5M and said the firm looks for a first handful of customers with a real transactional relationship, not pre-revenue teams.

What is the leadership council?

A group of experienced Canadian business people attached to the fund. It is the firm's stated differentiator — the "connections" half of a "capital plus connections" pitch — and the mechanism by which it says it identifies, engages and coaches companies as well as funding them.

Is the fund still actively investing?

Not established here. Roberts described the firm on stage in 2021 as "late in our fund" and between funds at that moment, he has since moved on to CMD Capital and then RBCx, and suv.vc has published no news since October 2021. Nothing was found either way, so nothing is claimed.
