About
Shutterstock describes itself as "a family of brands delivering scalable creative and GenAI solutions" — a content library plus the tools and data around it. Its own about page reports more than 450 million images, with 200,000 added every day, from over a million contributors; more than a billion images, video clips and music tracks downloaded; and customers in more than 150 countries across a site available in 21 languages.
The business has three sides: licensing creative content, a Data and AI Services business that licenses metadata and content to model builders, and the GIPHY platform, which the company calls uniquely its own. Its investor site also lists an acquisition of Envato.
The last two years have been difficult ones. A proposed merger with Getty Images, announced in January 2025, was terminated; interim chief executive and chief financial officer Rik Powell said in August 2026 that the company had since moved to strengthen its balance sheet and cut costs, with more than $70 million of annualised operating expense reductions taken over the previous 18 months and a further $60 million targeted by the end of the year. Second-quarter 2026 revenue of $221.8 million was down 17% year over year: Content fell 17% to $165.7 million and Data, Distribution and Services fell 16% to $56.1 million.
Shutterstock is where FlashStock ended up. Grant Munro built the Toronto custom-content platform and told the TechTO stage in 2017 how it reached a roughly US$50 million acquisition; Shutterstock bought it that year; his profile here records that he stayed on to lead the custom-content business, a role not restated from a Shutterstock page.

Quick answers
What does Shutterstock do?
It licenses stock images, video and music, sells custom content and generative-AI creative tools, and runs a data business that licenses content and metadata to AI model builders. It also owns GIPHY and Envato.
Did Shutterstock and Getty Images merge?
No. The merger announced on 7 January 2025 was terminated. In August 2026 the company's interim CEO described cost and balance-sheet actions taken "following the termination of our proposed merger".
What is Shutterstock's link to Toronto?
It acquired FlashStock, the Toronto custom-content platform Grant Munro founded, in 2017. Munro's own TechTO talk that year was titled "0 - $50 mm in 3.5 yrs", and his profile here records that he stayed on at Shutterstock afterwards.
