Specsy

Specsy was a Toronto company that sold optical retailers a way to make custom 3D-printed eyeglass frames. A store app took a roughly 30-second 3D scan of the customer's face, designed the frames on a live image of it, and Specsy printed them in-house. It shut down in 2022.

About

Specsy made bespoke 3D-printed eyeglass frames for optical retailers. Founded in Toronto in November 2016 by Milan Madhavji, who was also its chief technology officer, and Ashley Barby, its co-founder and chief operating officer, it was Madhavji's second company — he applied the 3D scanning and printing he had built up at his oral radiology practice, Canaray, to eyewear. The model was wholesale rather than retail: Specsy supplied optical professionals with the hardware and cloud software, they scanned and designed the frames with the patient in the chair, and Specsy printed the frames on in-house multi-colour 3D printers. It launched its line in October 2017 and announced entry into the United States at Vision Expo East in early 2018, by which point it had accounts across Canada and into the US. A notice posted by one of its retail partners in May 2022 said Specsy was shutting down services following operational changes during Covid; specsy.com no longer responds.
