Toronto Metropolitan University

Toronto Metropolitan University is a downtown Toronto university founded in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology and renamed TMU in April 2022. Two of its professors took the TechTO stage on the same day in July 2024 to argue opposite halves of the same question: how AI should be used in teaching, and what it does to creative work.

About

The university opened in 1948 as the Ryerson Institute of Technology and its board voted unanimously on 26 April 2022 to rename it Toronto Metropolitan University, following the Standing Strong Task Force's recommendations on Egerton Ryerson's role in the residential school system. Its communication and design faculty, founded in 1984 as the Faculty of Communication and Design, was rebranded The Creative School in 2021. Both took the same TechTO stage in July 2024. Kris Alexander — an associate professor whom he notes Google returns for "the professor of video games" — walked through how he uses AI inside online modules, in classroom technology and in teaching coding. Michael Bergmann of The Creative School deliberately stayed off tools and specifics, arguing instead about what AI means for creative industries as a matter of philosophy, from a background that mixes performance, design and critical studies.
