About
truLOCAL was founded in 2015 by Marc Lafleur, then 25, to sell subscription boxes of locally raised meat — grass-fed beef, pasture-raised chicken — directly to Canadian households. A 2018 appearance on CBC's Dragons' Den brought a deal with Michele Romanow and accelerated it; the company grew past 60 staff and $20 million in annual revenue before being acquired in 2021 for $16.8 million. Lafleur told a TechTO People panel in July 2020 that the business had shifted its emphasis from convenience to Canada's regional supply chains, which the pandemic had shown to be more fragile than assumed. He used the same appearance to argue that founders who have built an audience are obliged to use it when an issue stops being about branding and becomes about human rights.
Backers
