About
Founded in 1827 as King's College and renamed the University of Toronto in 1850, U of T is Canada's largest university and the anchor of the Toronto Discovery District, with full affiliation to the University Health Network and a role in bringing Johnson & Johnson's first international JLABS incubator to MaRS. Its Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation took the HealthTO stage in December 2018 through associate professor Emily Seto, whose talk was about the second valley of death — the gap between a promising pilot and sustained, scaled use. Her own example was her PhD work: a smartphone telemonitoring system for heart failure management, built on a BlackBerry because that was state of the art at the time, which became the Medly programme and is now standard of care at UHN. Her argument was that launching imperfectly and then iterating is what keeps a health innovation out of what she called the warehouse of shelved good ideas.
