About

Waabi's argument is that self-driving does not have to be brute-forced with road miles. Its approach pairs deep learning with probabilistic inference and a high-fidelity closed-loop simulator, so most testing and training happens virtually. Urtasun set the company up in Toronto rather than moving to the US — a choice she had already made publicly on the Best of TechTO stage in early 2020, while still running Uber ATG Toronto, when she argued Toronto had the talent and needed the local ecosystem to keep it. The Series A closed in June 2021 at US$83.5 million led by Khosla Ventures; the US$200 million Series B in June 2024 was led by Uber and Khosla with NVIDIA, Volvo Group Venture Capital, Porsche SE, Scania Invest and Ingka Investments.

Quick answers

What does Waabi do?

It builds the AI that drives long-haul trucks autonomously, and licenses it to truck makers rather than running its own fleet at scale.

Why is Waabi's simulator the point?

Its closed-loop simulator lets the company train and test against scenarios virtually, so it needs far fewer real-world road miles than the industry norm.

Who runs Waabi?

Founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun, previously chief scientist and head of R&D at Uber ATG, a professor of computer science at the University of Toronto and a co-founder of the Vector Institute.
