Women's College Hospital

Women's College Hospital is Canada's only fully ambulatory hospital — no overnight beds — and a Toronto teaching hospital focused on women's health and health system design. Its WIHV institute, launched in 2013, tests virtual care and digital health models in the real system rather than in a lab.

About

Women's College Hospital traces to the Woman's Medical College, opened in Toronto on 1 October 1883 by Dr. Emily Stowe and her supporters so that women could study medicine in Canada. The hospital itself opened on 10 November 1911 in a house on Seaton Street, run by and for women. It is now Canada's only hospital with no inpatient beds — everything is ambulatory — which is what makes it useful to health tech founders: the WCH Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care, launched in 2013, runs as a living laboratory for new models of care, and evaluates digital health products in the conditions they would actually be sold into. Bailey Griffin brought that work to TechTO twice, in April 2018 and April 2019, as WIHV's manager of virtual care, arguing that research has to move at the speed of the startups it is meant to serve.

Backers

A publicly funded Ontario teaching hospital with an affiliated foundation. Not venture-backed.

Quick answers

What is Women's College Hospital?

A Toronto teaching hospital and Canada's only fully ambulatory hospital — it has no overnight beds. It is a long-standing centre for women's health and, through WIHV, for redesigning how care is delivered.

What is WIHV?

The WCH Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care, launched in 2013 as a living laboratory: it builds and tests virtual care models and digital health tools inside the real health system rather than in isolation.

Why does it appear in a tech directory?

Because it is one of the few places a Canadian digital health startup can get its product evaluated inside a hospital. Bailey Griffin ran that evaluation and market-entry work and presented it at TechTO in 2018 and 2019.
