About
Carly Steiman has been an electrician for close to twenty years, eight of them running Lady Electric, her residential electrical business in Vancouver. Workbee came out of a question she kept being asked: homeowners who had hired her wanted referrals to other women in the trades, and there was no good way to give them one. The company describes itself as a home operating system rather than a marketplace — a seasonal subscription that handles maintenance on a schedule and connects homeowners with vetted tradespeople, positioned around caring for homes and for aging parents. The other half of the design is supply-side: it is built to route reliable, repeat work to women and gender-diverse people working in the trades. Alongside it Steiman runs the Tradeswomen Calendar and Exhibit, a campaign placing photographs of real women in trades into Canadian schools, which has been covered by CBC and Global News and nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction award.
