CarboNet

CarboNet is a Vancouver cleantech company that treats industrial wastewater with nanotechnology-engineered flocculants and coagulants, spun out of University of British Columbia drug-delivery research. It has raised roughly $26 million, sells into oilfield, municipal, food and automotive water treatment, and distributes through Brenntag Specialties.

About

CarboNet's chemistry came out of UBC, where Michael Carlson was researching drug-delivery systems and found the same molecular design worked for binding contaminants in water. The result is the NanoNet platform, which generates flocculants and coagulants that, in the company's words, "adjust in real time to changing wastewater conditions" — SimpleFloc, SimplePrime and an automated dosing service it calls SpecialOps. The company was launched by Amielle Lake, Barry Yates, Bill Schonbrun and Michael Carlson after Carlson took the idea to the incubator entrepreneurship@UBC; Carlson is chief technology officer and Lake is co-founder and chief commercial officer. Lake had earlier founded Tagga Media, the mobile and cross-device marketing company she spoke about on the TechVancouver stage in August 2016. CarboNet raised $5.5 million from angel investors in 2019 and took the technology to Texas oilfields, where Business in Vancouver reported it cleaned 100 billion litres of wastewater in 2021. A further US$6 million led by Monashee Capital followed in February 2022, bringing total equity and debt funding to about $26 million, and NGIF Capital led a Series A round announced in March 2024. Brenntag Specialties distributes its products.

Backers

Angel investors funded the $5.5-million 2019 seed; Monashee Capital Corp led a US$6-million round in February 2022; NGIF Capital, through Cleantech Ventures, led a Series A announced in March 2024. Total funding was reported at about $26 million in equity and debt as of 2022.

Quick answers

What does CarboNet do?

It makes nanotechnology-engineered flocculants and coagulants that pull contaminants out of industrial wastewater, plus automated dosing systems, so plants can reduce, recycle and reuse the water they already have.

Where did the technology come from?

University of British Columbia research. Michael Carlson was working on drug-delivery systems when he found the same chemistry could bind contaminants in water; he took the idea to entrepreneurship@UBC.

Who founded CarboNet?

Amielle Lake, Barry Yates, Bill Schonbrun and Michael Carlson. Carlson is chief technology officer and invented the NanoNet platform; Lake is chief commercial officer and earlier founded Tagga Media.

How much has CarboNet raised?

About $26 million in equity and debt as of 2022 — a $5.5-million angel seed in 2019 and a US$6-million round led by Monashee Capital in February 2022 — followed by a Series A led by NGIF Capital in March 2024.
