About

CertClean is a Canadian certification for beauty and personal care products with safer formulations. To carry the mark, a product's label is screened against more than 1,400 potentially harmful chemicals; thousands of products now carry the certification, which gives shoppers a shortcut to recognizing cleaner formulations without reading an ingredient deck. Founder and CEO Jenise Lee holds a chemical engineering degree from the University of Waterloo and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business. She spent years as an environmental engineering consultant helping industries deal with contamination they had caused, then lost her aunt and her brother to non-genetic cancers; she took the MBA and built a proactive alternative on the consumer side. She has been named among Canada's top sustainability leaders and Canada's top 100 health influencers, and nominated for the Governor General's Innovation Award. She also runs Clean Beauty Awards and the shopping site Purpicks. Lee presented at TechTO in December 2016 on saying no — to other people's asks and to your own ideas — as the thing that makes execution possible.
