co-being design

co-being design is a Toronto studio that mentors teams in public health-care organisations to run design work themselves. Nadine Hare and Tieni Meninato specialise in co-design and collaboration, so a client finishes an actual project and learns the methods and tools along the way rather than buying a report.

About

The studio describes its people as design mentors rather than consultants: "We help teams embed design approaches in the work they do, with a focus on co-design and collaboration." The distinguishing promise is that collaborating with the firm means a client's team completes a project and learns key design methods and tools while doing it.

Its published work is public-sector and health: re-envisioning how Health Canada engages people with lived experience; two projects with WIHV — collaboratively envisioning the future of health equity in Toronto, and enabling access to care for all Ontarians; and work with the University of Toronto collaboratively defining policy priorities for digital health.

Nadine Hare is a design anthropologist who teaches human-centred design and design research at the University of Toronto and OCAD University, with a focus on co-design and decolonising research, and is an Innovation Fellow at Women's College Hospital. Tieni Meninato works where design meets social change, drawing on graphic design, service design and future studies; she is also an Innovation Fellow at Women's College Hospital and Design Coordinator at the Pluriversal Futures Design Lab at Cornell University.
