About
The company traces to James Colliander, then a mathematics professor at the University of Toronto, and the logistical problem of marking more than 5,000 exams with a hundred graders. Crowdmark's answer was to scan the paper — or let students photograph and upload their own work — and move the marking itself online, where a teaching team can split a question across graders, apply a rubric consistently and hand back annotated feedback quickly. Michelle Caers joined as chief marketing officer in 2014 and became chief executive in 2018; she had been a regional sales manager at Desire2Learn and chief customer officer at Savvica, and founded the strategy and design firm DesignedUX in 2013. By 2019, Western University reported, Crowdmark users had graded 42 million pages across more than 36 countries, with the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo among its core clients. The current product positions itself as "the leading grading solution for online and paper-based assessments" and uses AI to help educators "grade 3X faster while leaving personalized feedback for students." Caers spoke at TechTO in October 2016 — for DesignedUX, not Crowdmark — on knowing your customer, and on why founders should stop buying branded swag.
Backers
No venture round is on the public record; the company's origins are in University of Toronto research rather than a funded launch.
