About

Founded in Toronto in 2010 by Casper Wong, Moussa Tabcharani and Chris Chan, Dwello set out to kill the rent cheque. Tenants connect a bank account, rent moves automatically, and landlords get the paperwork online. It went through Ryerson's DMZ accelerator in 2016 and placed second in The Next Big Idea in Fintech, run by DMZ and BMO. On the TechTO stage that April, Chan demoed the Dwello Score, which read 90 to 360 days of bank transactions — income, average balance, spending, bounced payments — to screen a tenant where a credit check alone fell short. Dwello later dropped its rent-to-credit-bureau reporting, saying trials showed rent payments did not move renters' scores enough, and now sells a rent-payments API.
