Kris Braun started KidsWifi after a first startup that took years and failed. This time he skipped hardware development entirely: he found an existing device with the right components and price, bought 5,000 of them, replaced the firmware with his own software and put his sticker over the manufacturer's logo. He told the TechWaterloo audience in 2017 that the thing customers actually judged it on was reliability, not the quality of the filtering, and that the hook was the two-minute setup. Within half the lifespan of his previous company it was selling in two markets, had retail deals and was expanding internationally.
